Shimla: India’s first voter Shyam Saran Negi died at his home in Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday morning. He was 106.

Prime Minister Jai Ram Thakur tweeted his condolences over the death, saying the thought that Negi exercised his right a few days ago despite poor health will always make him emotional.

Kinnaur Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussian Sadiq said Negi would be cremated with all state honors. The official had congratulated the centenarian at his home after the vote two days ago.

Negi was the brand ambassador for the electoral commission. Election officials from the district will attend his funeral, Himachal Pradesh chief electoral officer Maneesh Garg said.

Prime Minister Jai Ram Thakur said on Twitter: “It pains me to learn of the passing of India’s first voter, Shyam Saran Negi. He kept to his duty and gave his vote on November 3rd 34 always makes me emotional.”

An EK spokesman said Negi was a man of exceptional faith in democracy.

“ECI mourns Shri Shyam Saran Negi. We are infinitely grateful for his service to the nation,” the spokesman said.

“He inspired millions to vote, even before his death he voted by mail for the 2022 general election in Himachal Pradesh on November 2, 2022,” the electoral body said on Twitter.

The BJP and Congress also expressed their condolences to the Negi family.

“The BJP expresses its deep sadness and condolences at the death of independent India’s first voter, Shyam Saran Negi. May God give peace to the departed soul,” the party said.
