Legalize motorcycle taxis – Grab – BusinessMirror

After the re-establishment of a technical working group (TWG) for motorcycle taxis, Grab and Move It together called on the government to speed up the legalization of motorcycle taxis in the Philippines and open the industry to more players.

In separate statements, Grab and Move It said increased competition “will address commuter needs for affordable, safe and reliable public transit.”

On Wednesday, the House Committee on Metro Manila Development held a public hearing on the safety and efficiency of motorcycle taxis, which have yet to be legalized as public transit.

“We appreciate that there are ongoing discussions that would help our lawmakers develop legislation to legalize and regulate the industry. Introducing a law is the win-win solution for everyone involved, especially our commuters who deserve an efficient and safe form of public transport,” Grab said in a statement.

“In a regulated environment, we expect and welcome more industry players as it will provide more employment opportunities for Filipinos and more choices for our commuters. The competition will make the motorcycle taxi business livelier and improve its service.”

During the hearing, lawmakers agreed that there is “no need” to review and contest the acquisition of Move It by Grab because they meet the qualification parameters set by the first TWG for motorcycle taxis.

“Nagpapasalamat po kami to annoy mambabatas and government officials when it comes to terminating the takeover deal with Grab, which is legal above the board.” Makailang ulit na po natin itong ipinaliwanag sa publico, and nagagalak po kami na maging ating mga mambabatas and regulators ay sang-ayon po ditto. Let’s drive a motorcycle taxi and learn the rides with drivers in Pasahero,” said Francis Juan, chairman of Move It.

Earlier this month, Secretary of Transportation Jaime J. Bautista ordered the re-establishment of the TWG as the body that would “oversee and oversee the continued pilot implementation of MC taxi operations.”

Three motorcycle taxi platforms – Angkas, JoyRide and Move It – are currently operating under a pilot program pending the legalization of the service.
